Hong Kong firm awarded 3G mobile licence

Hutchison Whampoa, a Hong Kong-based telecommunications company, has been awarded Ireland's first 3G mobile phone licence.

Hutchison Whampoa, a Hong Kong-based telecommunications company, has been awarded Ireland's first 3G mobile phone licence.

The third generation mobile licence provides for 80% population coverage with a start date of January 2004. It will bring almost E51m to the Exchequer.

Vodafone and O2 will be offered 3G licences which cover just over 50% of the population.
