At a news conference in Belfast, Pat Finucane's three children, Michael, Katherine and John, who witnessed their father's shooting 13 years ago, said that a public inquiry was the only way all the questions surrounding the murder could be addressed.

Michael Finucane, who is a Dublin-based solicitor, said that the family had no confidence in either the investigation by John Stevens or the report commissioned from the Canadian judge, Peter Cory.

Michael Finucane said that the only way the allegations of collusion by the British security services in his father's murder, and other questions surrounding the shooting could be addressed and answers sought, was through a full judicial inquiry. He called on British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, to establish such a tribunal with extreme urgency.

Katherine Finucane said that the family welcomed the support for a public inquiry voiced by the Irish Government, but she said Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, should now press Tony Blair strongly on the matter.
