Euro reaches 18-month high against US dollar

The euro has climbed above 95 US cents for the first time since January last year, following steep declines on Wall Street last night.

The single European currency hit a high point of 95.03 US cents, before slipping back slightly to 94.96.

The euro has risen steadily against the dollar since the start of the year following concern about prospects for growth of the US economy, corporate profits and share prices, and in response to a rise in the US current account deficit.

These factors have caused the dollar to fall.
