Mitchell will stand in FG leadership vote

Gay Mitchell has confirmed that he will be putting his name forward for the the Fine Gael leadership.

The Dublin South Central TD said 'Fine Gael has a huge and challenging task ahead' and that 'it will require a person who will give the party a clear identity.'

Mr Mitchell is the fourth member of the party to announce his intention to run. The other candidates are Richard Bruton, Enda Kenny and Phil Hogan.

The Fine Gael Parliamemtary Party will hold the leadership election next Wednesday, the day before the Dail resumes. Attempts to find a consensus candidate at a two day meeting earlier in the week did not succeed.
