Trevor Sargent
Green leader retained seat
Ciaran Cuffe
News TD for Dún Laoghaire
The Greens have added four seats to their existing two from the 28th Dáil. Paul Nicholas Gogarty was successful in Dublin Mid West, Eamon Ryan gained a seat in Dublin South and Ciaran Cuffe was elected in Dún Laoghaire.
At 2.30 a.m. Dan Boyle completed the party's best electoral day ever by taking the fourth seat in Cork South Central.
Party leader Trevor Sargent held on to his seat in Dublin North, topping the poll, while John Gormley was elected in Dublin South-East. Mr Sargent welcomed the result and said his party would definitely have some influence in the next Dáil.
On RTE's This Week programme Trevor Sargent said the question of the Greens entering coalition was 'academic' given the Taoiseach's preference for the PDs. It looks more likely, he said, that the Greens will be trying to implement their policies from the Opposition benches.
