French police tear gas refugees at Sangatte camp

French police are reported to have used tear gas to break up a fight at a refugee camp near the Channel Tunnel by refugees from the Sangatte camp.

Violence erupted as several hundred Kurdish and Afghan refugees fought each other with iron bars and stones during a game of football. Four refugees were badly hurt and 14 sustained light injuries.

Meanwhile Britain and France have pledged to work together to tackle immigration. The French Interior Minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, and the British Home Secretary, David Blunkett, are reported to have agreed to step up cooperation on clamping down on illegal immigration.

The British government and Channel Tunnel rail companies have accused France of inadequate policing around Sangatte, which is located near to the French end of the Tunnel and currently holds about 1,500 refugees. Refugees from the Sangatte camp often illegally try to board trains bound for Britain.

According to a statement issued after their talks, the two ministers agreed to meet on the matter in June and July. They hare hoping a common position on immigration for the longer term, will be agreed based on a concerted approach on asylum and immigration policies, within the European Union.

The statement said Blunkett welcomed recent French efforts to reinforce security at the Tunnel "while expressing concern about problems arising at Frethun station".

Security at Frethun, the freight yard at the French end of the Tunnel, where immigrants try to jump trains or walk to Britain, remains a contentious issue between the two countries.

French police denied British charges that they lowered security around the Tunnel entrance last Friday, but later admitted some security officers had retreated in the face of a 300-strong crowd who tried to storm the train line.

The British Transport Police said earlier this week that 26 people attempted to enter Britain illegally through the tunnel on Sunday, with 45 more trying it on Monday.
