Carter appeals for end to animosity

The former American President, Jimmy Carter, has called on the United States and Cuba to make fundamental changes aimed at ending 40 years of animosity.

The former American President, Jimmy Carter, has called on the United States and Cuba to make fundamental changes aimed at ending 40 years of animosity.

In an unprecedented television address by an American to the Cuban people, Mr Carter urged Washington to lift its trade embargo on President Fidel Castro's regime. He said that as the world's most powerful country, the United States should make the first move.

He also called on the Cuban leadership to abide by the core tenets of democracy by allowing freedom of speech and association.
