Carter makes landmark visit to Cuba

The former United States President, Jimmy Carter, has become the most senior American figure to visit Cuba since the Communists took power there in 1959.

The former United States President, Jimmy Carter, has become the most senior American figure to visit Cuba since the Communists took power there in 1959.

Mr Carter will be trying to resolve four decades of feuding between Cuba and the United States. He was welcomed by the Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, who had invited him personally to the island.

Speaking through an interpreter, Mr Castro said that the former President would find his visit free and open.
