Fine Gael's Deirdre Clune has accused the Government of putting bottle banks around the country out of business.

She said due to the Minister Noel Dempsey's inaction the only alternative now is to dump glass in already overflowing landfills.

Ms Clune promised that Fine Gael in government would turn recycling into a viable industry by providing capital grants and subsidies for the development of the Irish recycling industry.

Ms Clune was commenting on yesterday's annoucement that Ardagh glass is to close its bottling plant at Ringsend in Dublin. The plant is the only glass recycling facility in the Republic.
