Pakistan's Supreme Court clears Musharraf referendum

A ruling by Pakistan's Supreme Court has cleared the way for President Musharraf to hold a referendum on extending his rule. The court rejected petitions brought by opposition parties seeking to stop the vote, which is scheduled for next Tuesday.

It ruled that since the constitution had been in abeyance after the military takeover in 1999, President Musharraf was entitled to go ahead with the referendum. Pakistan's main political and religious parties have united in opposing the vote.

But President Musharraf says he is presenting himself before the people to end uncertainty in the country. He is seeking to extend his term in office for another five years.
