Over 200 members of the Irish Countrywomen's Association have protested outside the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar. The women from Westmeath and Longford are calling on the Government to make funding available to open a four-storey wing of the hospital. The wing has been built since 1997 but has not yet been fitted out.

The Chairperson of the Westmeath ICA Federation said that the Minister for Health was on record as saying it would be another five years before the new wing was fitted out. Nuala Murphy said that the Celtic Tiger will have vanished by then, adding that thousands of people requiring treatment will have suffered.
