The country's biggest teaching union, the INTO, has published a set of guidelines for tackling the problem of racism in schools.

The country's biggest teaching union, the INTO, has published a set of guidelines for tackling the problem of racism in schools.

The guidelines were drawn up in response to what the union says is the need to challenge racist attitudes and practices.

The growing number of refugees and asylum seekers has prompted widespread debate on the issue of racism in Ireland. Schools are the first place where the children of immigrants will experience Irish attitudes.

In line with the principle of equality in education, the INTO has drawn up guidelines on best practice for educating children of ethnic minorities, including travellers.

The topics being covered include bilingual learners and dealing with racist incidents in the classroom and playground.

Many schools are now implementing the INTO guidelines but the union is calling for additional resources to support the education of refugees and ethnic minorities.
