The Finnish owners of Tara Mines have announced that they will re-start production in June. Outokumpu said that a feasibility study confirmed that Tara had the potential of being a cost-effective, profitable and long-term operation.
The company said that, in the short term, the number of employees on site would be over 400 and that the total workforce is expected to be 670 when production starts again. The Board had been meeting to discuss the proposal to re-open from its Irish management following an improvement in the price of zinc and agreement with unions on a range of cost cutting and productivity issues.
Tara Mines suspended production at its operation in Navan before Christmas with 700 people being temporarily laid off. The company blamed the low price of zinc for its decision at the time.
