The Sinn Féin election candidate for Kerry North, Martin Ferris, has been released from Garda custody. He had been questioned about a so-called vigilante attack in Castleisland last December.

A file is expected to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. Mr Ferris again denied any knowledge of the incident and he alleged that his arrest was part of a campaign of harassment being orchestrated against him and his party by Gardaí.

Mr Ferris also alleged he had been assaulted while in custody.
