The man suspected of planning the abduction of US journalist Daniel Pearl has been remanded in custody for a further two weeks by a Pakistani court.

The judge did not pursue murder charges against Sheikh Omar this morning on the basis that the investigation agencies have to recover the dead body and further evidence.

In his last court appearance, the British-born militant admitted that he was involved in the kidnapping of the Wall Street Journal correspondent.

Mr Pearl's death was confirmed last week. A videotape sent to Pakistan and US authorities showed his throat being slit with a knife. His body has still not been recovered.
