Pakistani officials have disregarded comments regarding a missing US journalist. The man suspected of kidnapping him, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, commonly known as Sheikh Omar, made the comments.

Sheikh Omar said today that he believed Wall Street Journal employee, Daniel Pearl, was dead. Mr Pearl disappeared in the Pakistani city of Karachi more than three weeks ago.

British born Sheikh Omar also told an anti-terrorism court in the southern city that he was responsible for the kidnap. Foreign Ministry officials have given the comments no credence, saying that he said yesterday that he thought Mr Pearl was still alive.

"This gentleman has been making several statements and changing those statements," Foreign Ministry spokesman Aziz Ahmed Khan told a news briefing. "We cannot give any credence to any of these statements that he gives."
