Pakistani police have claimed that a British-born Islamic militant has confessed to kidnapping US journalist Daniel Pearl during intense questioning. Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, known as Sheikh Omar, had previously told police that he believed the 38-year-old Wall Street Journal correspondent was still alive, but he had refused to say where he was being held.
29-year-old Sheikh Omar is believed to be a member of the radical Islamic militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad. He is being held in Karachi.
Mr Pearl disappeared on 23 January in Karachi after telling his wife he was going to meet the leader of a little-known militant Islamic organisation.
