Water contamination linked to farmyard effluent

watch listen

Galway County Council has said that the town water supply in Athenry has been contaminated by farmyard effluent. The council today claimed that the effluent leaked into the source during last week's heavy rainfall. The IFA has rejected the claim and called for an independent analysis of the water.

Emergency drinking water supplies are being provided for up to 3,000 people. Householders and businesses in the town said that they were still seriously concerned over the risks they were exposed to during the past week.

Athenry is the third County Galway town to have serious water contamination, following similar alerts in Ballinasloe and Galway City last year.
