Pakistani police have said that a British-born Islamic militant arrested in the city of Lahore in connection with the kidnapping of Daniel Pearl had told them the American reporter was still alive.
Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, known as Sheikh Omar, is said to have told police that Mr Pearl is in the city of Karachi. Mr Pearl, who worked for the Wall Street Journal, vanished in the southern port city of Karachi three weeks ago.
He was trying to make contact with Islamic radical groups and investigate possible links between alleged shoe bomber Richard Reid and Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.
