Tara Mines,Closed since November
Management at Tara Mines will submit a proposal for the reopening of the mine to its Finnish owners on 15 March. The County Meath mine was closed in November, resulting in 700 workers being temporarily laid off, due the a fall in the global price of zinc.
Despite continuing weakness in the price of zinc, the closure of a number of mines around the world means the market may strengthen in the months ahead.
In a statement, Tara said today that the mine still had the potential to be a low cost and long-term viable operation. If the Finnish owners of Tara, Outokumpu, approve the plan to reopen, full production could resume in June.
