9.00 News: David Davin-Power, Political Correspondent, on Tom Parlon's declaration as a candidate for the PDs in the next general election
The former leader of the IFA, Tom Parlon, says he will contest the next general election as a candidate for the Progressive Democrats.
Party leader Mary Harney made the announcement in Tullamore this afternoon.
Mr. Parlon, who is 49, will stand in the Laois/Offaly constituency. He had been in talks with both the Progressive Democrats and Fine Gael prior to today's announcement.
Mr Parlon said earlier this week that he would "not be chasing a backbench job".
