An American who allegedly fought with the Taliban is to be charged with conspiracy to kill US nationals. John Walker Lindh is being held aboard a US warship in the Arabian Sea.
The US Attorney General, John Ashcroft, said Lindh would be turned over to the US Justice Department to be charged with aiding and abetting a terrorist organisation.
The Americans are currently holding 50 other Taliban detainees at their military base in Cuba, including an Australian and a small number of British and French citizens.
