The Taoiseach has said that the abortion referendum would take place before Easter. On RTÉ radio, Bertie Ahern said that the cabinet would meet shortly to agree a date and that the Tánaiste, Mary Harney, and the Progressive Democrats strongly supported the proposals.
Mr Ahern told RTÉ News he was still hopeful of agreeing a pre-election transfer pact between Fianna Fáil and the PDs. He said that if the economy was managed correctly there should be no need to increase income tax rates.
Mr Ahern also said that his economic priority going forward would be to invest in infrastructural projects. He said that he was confident about the underlying strength of the economy. He also said that the second referendum on the Nice Treaty would be held after the election.
