Argentina's political parties have agreed to suspend presidential elections in March, which means a yet-to-be-selected interim president could govern until the next scheduled election in 2003. The Congress is due to choose a new interim president tomorrow after Adolfo Rodriguez Saa quit amid street protests.

The President announced his decision in a televised address to the nation, after spending just one week in office. He said that lack of support from his own Peronist Party was the reason behind his resignation. The Argentine Senate Chief, Ramon Puerta, who was next in line to take the presidency, also announced his resignation.
