Pakistan arrests Indian parliament attack suspect

Pakistan has said that it had arrested a prominent Muslim militant who India suspects is a terrorist. India believes the man was involved in the attack earlier this month on the Indian Parliament in Delhi.

Pakistan said that Masood Azhar was detained for making provocative speeches. Mr Azhar was detained at his house in the central province of Punjab.

The announcement of his arrest follows a speech by the Indian Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in which he accused Pakistan of pushing India towards war.

Mr Vajpayee was speaking in New Delhi against a backdrop of worsening relations between the two nuclear neighbours.

India recalled its high commissioner after blaming Pakistan-based Kashmiri separatists for the attack on the Indian Parliament. Pakistan has denied any involvement.
