Up to 80,000 protesters demanding jobs and social rights marched through Brussels this evening on the eve of a two-day European Union summit in the Belgian capital. The mood among the mostly trade unionist marchers was peaceful.

Police reported no arrests and none of the trouble that marred summits in Sweden and Italy earlier this year. Police said that about half the protesters were Belgian and the rest mostly from other European countries including Germany, Italy, France and Poland.
