It is reported that senior US military officers have visited Somalia for talks with local resistance fighters. It is believed the Americans want to identify potential terrorist targets in the country, which effectively lacks a government.

The officers were reportedly discussing whether the leaders of the Rahanwein Resistance Army (RRA) knew of any terrorist bases in the south or south west of the Horn of Africa country.

There has been recent speculation that the United States is planning a military campaign in Somalia, as a second phase in its war on terrorism. Washington has played down the likelihood of strikes against the country.
