Blaney calls for inquiry into McBrearty affair

listen

Independent deputy Harry Blaney has told a Donegal newspaper that an inquiry into the McBrearty affair was the only way to clear up the matter once and for all.

The Dáil is due to vote on an opposition motion tomorrow evening, which calls for a tribunal. The votes of the independents are vital if the move is to succeed.

Mr. Blaney, who represents the Raphoe area, home to the McBrearty family, told the Donegal People's Press that the affair was "a mess" and that the only way forward was a full judicial inquiry.

However, he said that he would have to see what amendments the Government might table before deciding whether to back the opposition motion.

Justice Minister John O'Donoghue is due to meet Mr Blaney and the other Donegal independent Thomas Gildea this afternoon.

It is expected that their discussions will focus on the opposition call for an inquiry into the McBrearty affair.
