Bloomberg to succeed Giuliani as Mayor of New York

The Republican candidate, Mike Bloomberg, has been elected Mayor of New York.

The Republican candidate, Mike Bloomberg, has been elected Mayor of New York. He will succeed Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

Mr Bloomberg, who has a personal fortune estimated at more than $4bn, spent $50m dollars on his campaign. 59-year-old Mr Bloomberg is founder of the financial news and information services company Bloomberg LP.

He had been trailing his rival, Mark Green, of the Democrats, in opinion polls until recently.
