TDs sent cannabis in the postMonday 05 November 2001 23.57
Several TDs at Leinster House received what is thought to be cannabis in the post today as part of a publicity stunt calling for the legalisation of cannabis.
A number of letters containing the substance were sent to the politicians at their Dáil offices and were discovered by officials checking the post following recent anthrax scares. Similar letters were sent to media organisations, including the RTÉ newsroom.
A 29-year-old man was arrested at the Dáil while trying to present a cannabis plant and a letter to Minister Eoin Ryan. Luke Flanagan, better known as Ming the Merciless, has been released without charge. A file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The man was arrested by uniformed Gardaí at Leinster House at around 2.45pm this afternoon. He was taken to Pearse Street Garda Station where he was also questioned about letters containing cannabis cigarettes, which are believed to have been sent to every TD in the Dáil. The man is a well-known campaigner for the legalisation of cannabis.
