The RUC Chief Constable has confirmed he will stand down next year. Sir Ronnie Flanagan, who has been in the post for five years, said that he should go in order to demonstrate the development of the new beginning in the police service.

He could have remained in the post for another two years, but today announced plans to leave once the first contingent of officers graduate and start duty with the new service next Spring.

Ronnie Flanagan said that he was absolutely committed to the changes in the North's police service. "Just as it was important for me to be the one who takes the RUC through this period of transition, it is equally important that somebody new takes it on from there in the relatively near future" he added.
