David Trimble's prospects of being re-elected tomorrow as First Minister dimmed this evening when at least one party member indicated that she would not support him in the vote.

Ulster Unionist Assembly member Pauline Armitage indicated that she intends to vote against David Trimble in the Northern Assembly tomorrow.

Mrs Armitage's support is crucial to the UUP leader's chances of re-election as First Minister.

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster, Pauline Armitage said that she could not vote for a policy which she felt was destroying the union.

Peter Weir, the other dissident Unionist, has said that he would not make a final decision on his vote until tomorrow.

Two centre parties, the Women's Coalition and the Alliance, could hold the key to Mr Trimble's survival.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin Minister Martin McGuinness said that there should be fresh Assembly elections if MLAs fail to elect a First and a Deputy First Minister.

Gerry Adams has repeated that fresh elections in Northern Ireland would be the only option of there is no outcome from tomorrow's Assembly vote for First Minister.

The Sinn Féin President was speaking on a visit to New York.
