Archbishop Connell apologises for commentsWednesday 31 October 2001 21.58
The Archbishop of Dublin, Desmond Connell, has apologised for comments he made about his Church of Ireland counterpart and Trinity College. In an interview for a book, he said that Church of Ireland Archbishop Walton Empey was not regarded as a high flier.
In a statement, he said that he wanted to make it clear that it was never his intention to denigrate Dr Empey, and profoundly regretted it if such an impression had been given. He also said he was sorry about some comments he made in the interview about Trinity.
Dr Connell added that the interview had been given almost a year ago in connection with a book due to be published next month.
