World Trade Centre, Over 4000 still missing
A memorial service for the thousands who perished in the 11 September terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre was held in New York today. The inter-denominational ceremony was held at "ground zero", in full view of the devastation.
Each of the relatives was offered an urn containing ashes from the ruins of the twin towers. Only 465 of the 519 bodies recovered have been identified. Over 4,000 people are still listed as missing.
Relatives of the victims gathered at the site of the twin towers to hear prayers and musical tributes. Twenty-one-year-old Limerick woman Shonagh Daly performed a composition by Andrew Lloyd Weber entitled "Let Us Love in Peace".
Today's service was only open to victims' relatives and a small section of the media. It was the first public service to be held at the site of the attack.
New York Mayor, Rudi Giuliani said that today's ceremony was a "catharsis for the families that are in tremendous sorrow". He added that families who have gone to ground zero find the experience comforting.
