The Irish Bank Officials' Association has said that banks have failed to prepare their staff adequately for the introduction of the euro. The IBOA has described the situation as 'intolerable'.
The General Secretary of the Irish Bank Officials' Association, Larry Broderick, made his comments at the union's biennial conference in Galway this morning.
He said the introduction of the euro was a "mammoth task" and the stress and strains were falling on staff. Extra staff promised by bank management had not been taken on.
Mr Broderick also claimed that banks had made clear to the IBOA that staff would be held individually responsible for errors made during the changeover process.
He also said that training for the euro changeover had been left to the last minute and that there was concern amongst bank staff that it would not be adequate to cope with the changeover to the euro.
