The United Nations and its Secretary General Kofi Annan have won the Nobel Peace Prize. The award was made in recognition of their work for human rights and to defuse global conflicts.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised 63-year-old Annan's breathing of "new life" into the 189-nation group. It said Annan had had fought for human rights and against AIDS and international terrorism.

The prize, named after Alfred Nobel, a Swedish philanthropist and inventor of dynamite, is worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($946,200). More than a dozen Nobel Peace Prizes have been made to UN agencies or workers since the UN was established in 1945.
