Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has condemned an attack by a Palestinian gunman on a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip. Mr Arafat described the attack as an "aggression against the ceasefire" signed with Israel.

He has ordered an inquiry into which militant group sanctioned the attack in which three people were killed and several others injured.

Meanwhile, the Israeli government was to decide today on how to respond to continued violence in the region. Israel set a deadline of noon for the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, to bring the unrest to an end.

The violence continued into this morning with Palestinians firing mortar shells at an Israeli industrial zone between the Gaza Strip and Israel. Grenades were also fired at an Israeli army position near Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

A car bomb exploded in a shopping area in Jerusalem yesterday. The explosion was the first such attack in Israel itself since Yasser Arafat declared a ceasefire on 18 September, promising to try to crack down on militants attacking Israeli targets.
