The Minister for Foreign Affairs has visited the ruins of the World Trade Centre in New York. Brian Cowen told reporters that words could not convey the devastation he saw.

He said that Ireland was not neutral when it came to international terrorism. Mr Cowen described his one-hour visit to "Ground Zero" last evening as a humbling experience. He said that it was hard to look at such an awful graveyard for so many people.

He told reporters afterwards that it was difficult to understand how such a mindless act could be perpetrated in the name of God. The Minister met the Mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani, at his control centre at Pier 92 earlier.

The Mayor told Mr Cowen that the people of New York needed the support of the people of Ireland and the people of the world. Mr Giuliani said that the bravery of many of the firemen and police officers who died had come from their strong Irish roots.
