Four Cavan men have been discovered injured but safe in a New York hospital. Their relatives had thought the men had died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre, which occurred over two weeks ago.
The Sinn Féin TD, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, who negotiated with the authorities on their families' behalf, said that the four were undocumented workers in the city. He added that they had sustained multiple injuries. One had broken both legs and a collar bone.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Colin Powell has thanked Ireland for its support in the wake of the terrorist attacks. Mr Powell was speaking after a meeting in Washington with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen.
Mr Powell said that he looked forward to co-operating with Ireland in the United Nations Security Council next month. The two men discussed Ireland's position on the international coalition against terrorism, as well as the Northern peace process at the meeting today.
Mr Cowen also had talks with the administration's most senior official on Northern Ireland, Richard Haas.
