Further evidence given at Bloody Sunday Inquiry

Updated: 11:43, Wednesday, 26 September 2001

A witness has told the Bloody Sunday inquiry how she saw a civilian gunman fire a shot from the Rossville flats in the Bogside area of Derry on the day of the shootings.

Mrs Monica Barr, who was 23-years-old at the time, told the Tribunal that from her house on Chamberlain street she saw a hand stick out of an open window on the eight floor of the flats.

The hand she said was holding a pistol pointed downwards. She said that she remembers one shot being fired from the pistol.

She said that almost immediately after seeing the shot, she heard a crack and saw the wood at the top of the window frame in the flats splinter. She said she presumed a bullet fired by a British soldier below the flat had hit the window frame.
