Two weeks after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre, the Irish consulate in New York has confirmed that the number of Irish people still reported as missing stands at eight.

A further five Irish people are confirmed dead, bringing to 13 the possible total number of Irish victims. This is less than previously feared.

Today, New Yorkers returned to the polls to vote in primary elections to choose a successor to Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The elections were originally scheduled for 11 September, but just hours after the first votes were cast, the twin towers were attacked, killing more than 6,500 people.

New Work Mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, has revised downward the number of people feared dead after the attacks a fortnight ago to 6,398. The estimated death toll from the attacks on the United States now stands at 6,910. This is the greatest single day loss of life in the country's history.
