World Trade Centre, Rescue operation is ongoing
The estimated number of people missing after the attack on the World Trade Centre in New York has gone up by 1,000. Up to Thursday afternoon, the number of those confirmed missing in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre was put at around 5,400.
But that evening, in a dramatic announcement, New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said that, from information now coming in, the figure had climbed to 6,333.
He said the reason for the increase was the number of foreign nationals now being reported as missing, and there was no certainty that this would be the final figure.
The Mayor had further grim news for the people of the city. He said that many of the bodies would never be recovered, such was the fireball which engulfed the area. So far 240 bodies have been recovered from beneath the rubble. But the search continues round the clock.
Though exhausted and tired, many of the rescuers work 24 hours without a break. In the coming days, the Mayor is expected to announce that the search and rescue operation is over and they will move into what is being called the recovery phase.
