The British Red Cross has said that Lord Archer did not have access to monies he raised for the organisation. He helped to raise millions of pounds in aid for Kurdish refugees in the aftermath of the Gulf War.
Police began looking into the matter after calls for an investigation following his conviction last month for perjury and perverting the course of justice at his 1987 libel trial. The disgraced peer had his prison security classification raised as a result of the investigation.
In 1991 Lord Archer said that he helped raise £57 million for the Kurds. Kurdish groups later complained that they had not seen anything like that amount of money.
The British Red Cross said that it had direct control over £2.5 million of the fund. Most of the £57 million was raised by foreign governments.
