Contempt of court proceedings resolved

Contempt of court proceedings initiated by a Dundalk man charged in connection with the Omagh bombing have been resolved. Colm Murphy from Ravensdale Dundalk is facing trial in the Special Criminal Court in October on charges of membership of an illegal organisation and conspiring to cause the Omagh bomb explosion in 1998.

Mr Murphy took proceedings in the High Court against the BBC over a Panorama programme and against Associated Newspapers following a report published in the Daily Mail after the Panorama broadcast. The programme, broadcast in October of last year, claimed to identify the people responsible for the Omagh bombing.

Today the High Court heard that the proceedings against the Daily Mail had been resolved. A statement read on behalf of the newspaper said that it wished to make clear that Colm Murphy was entitled to be presumed innocent of the charges preferred against him unless or until proven guilty. The statement said that any reference which could be capable of a contrary construction would be inappropriate.
