A leading waste management consultancy has defended the decision by Fingal County Council to impose a quota on commercial waste contractors in its landfill site. Baleally is the only legal dump in the Dublin area and is now almost full. The employers' group, IBEC, has warned of a pile-up of rubbish on the streets of Dublin this August if an alternative waste disposal facility is not found.

The quota system for Baleally landfill comes into effect on 1 August. As well as halving the loads of contractors, there will be a 45% increase in disposal charges. The problem is not confined to Dublin. Dumps are closing to commercial and industrial waste all over the country. Some landfills sites have shut down completely.

IBEC has said that hotels, restaurants and pubs will be worst affected because of the high output of food waste. A policy consultant on waste management has called on businesses to be more proactive in the recycling of waste.
