The European Commission has decided to take Ireland to the European Court of Justice. The Commission says that Ireland has failed to come up with national measures to implement EU laws on the transport of dangerous goods by road and rail. The court has already convicted Ireland twice on the issue of transporting dangerous goods by road.
The Commission said that, as no progress is visible in implementing the directives, it had decided to push ahead with court action against Ireland. But the Commission said that it might seek a daily penalty payment from Ireland backdated to the first judgement against it in September of last year.
The Greek government was fined €20,000 a day for breaching environmental regulations in a similar case against Greece. Ireland also faces two court cases relating to the transport of dangerous goods by rail. The Commission is also taking similar actions against Greece and Italy.
