Supporters of Slobodan Milosevic are planning more demonstrations against his extradition. The ousted Yugoslav President has been extradited to the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague. Mr Milosevic was handed over to the Tribunal by the Serbian government on Thursday.

Up to 10,000 Milosevic supporters took part in a protest last night in central Belgrade, promising reprisals against the new regime. Riot police were on standby for the protest, but no incidents were reported. Prosecutors in The Hague are preparing further charges against Milosevic, which may include genocide in Bosnia and Croatia.

The trial of Mr Milosevic will not begin for another eight to twelve months and is likely to last over a year, according to the Tribunal president. Claude Jorda, president of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia said that the length of the trial could depend on whether a second indictment was issued against the former president for crimes committed in Croatia and Bosnia.

Mr Milosevic is so far only accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity for his role in the 1999 Serb crackdown on ethnic Albanians in the Serbian province of Kosovo.
