Jeannie Johnston project abandoned for now The Jeannie Johnston project to sail a replica famine tall ship from Tralee to the United States has been abandoned, at least for this year. The board overseeing the project made the decision in Tralee yesterday. The Minister for the Marine, Frank Fahey, has expressed his regret and called for a review of the project, which had a budget of £5 million but has now cost £10 million.

Threat of civil war hangs over Macedonia Is Macedonia descending into civil war? Yesterday, there was a crisis but after President Boris Trajkovski and the prime minister spoke to the country, trying to play things down, the mood has calmed somewhat.

Day care centre for arthritis opens today The first national day care centre for rheumatology and arthritis in the country will be opened at St James' Hospital today. The centre will provide free services to patients suffering from arthritis and rheumatology. It was funded by the Arthritis Foundation and two drug companies, Pharmacia and Pfizer.

UN conference on AIDS branded PR stunt The UN General Assembly on HIV/AIDS taking place in New York is nothing more than a PR stunt and will do little to help the millions suffering from the disease, according to Mark Curtis, head of policy for Christian Aid.
