Ronnie Biggs, the so-called Great Train Robber, was in hospital today after suffering a new health setback, a family spokeswoman said. Biggs had been held in custody at Belmarsh Prison, south-east London, after ending his self-imposed exile in Brazil. He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Greenwich, south-east London, yesterday where his condition was described as stable.

A statement issued on behalf of Biggs said the 71-year-old was admitted to hospital following a change in his condition. The statement went on: "He [Biggs] is undergoing medical tests but was said by the hospital to be stable."

His son Michael spent the evening by his bedside. He continues to be deeply concerned about his father's health. A hospital spokeswoman said today: "There has been no change in his condition and he remains stable." Biggs flew back to Britain last month after 35 years on the run and was immediately arrested. He made a brief appearance at West London Magistrates Court before being taken to prison to continue the 30-year sentence he was given for his part in the 1963 robbery of a Glasgow to London mail train in which a driver was beaten about the head.
