The great train robber, Ronald Biggs, who has been on the run from British justice for 35 years, is to fly back to England tomorrow, according to Brazilian police. The timing of his flight, which is being financed by The Sun newspaper, indicates that he will be back in Britain early on Monday. The Foreign Office said that it had issued him with an emergency passport, which allows him to make a single journey back to Britain.

Mr Biggs, who is 71 years old, is frail after suffering two strokes. He told British police earlier this week he wanted to return and give himself up on arrival in London. Mr Biggs escaped from a London prison in 1965, two years after helping to pull off one of the most notorious robberies in British history. He had served 15 months of a 30-year sentence for his part in the robbery of a Glasgow-to-London mail train.
